FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I sign up?

Right away, you'll get an email with information specific to the group you signed up for. Volunteers from ESL Classes Denver will call you before the next class to welcome you and help you figure out whether you should be in level 1 or level 2.

What are ESL classes like?

Though classes will begin with a short vocabulary review, the majority of the time in an ESL class will be spent practicing English conversation with peers. Aside from the Instructor, there are several other English-speaking volunteers that work one-on-one with students to answer questions and help with pronunciation.

Classes are an hour long and conclude with an optional 10-minute Gospel discussion centered on Jesus Christ. A student manual is provided so you know what to study in preparation for next class.

When do classes start?

You can start right away! Classes are once a week and each class meets at different times of the week (for more information, see locations.) Because the primary role of ESL classes is to help you practice English conversation, the order of the lessons taught is not significant. You can join at any time, regardless of how far the class is in to the lessons.

What if I can't make it to class?

Please try to inform your Instructor beforehand if you need to miss a class. Try not to miss too many! If you feel like you are falling behind and would like extra practice during the week to catch up, you can ask one of the missionaries in class for help.

Are classes really free?

Yes, completely! We believe in following the example of Jesus Christ in serving our fellow brothers and sisters in need with no expectation of anything in return. “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” (Mosiah 2:17)

Who are my teachers?

Teachers are unpaid volunteers who are fluent in English. Most of our teachers are also bilingual and know how difficult it is to learn a new language. In addition to our Instructors, other volunteers attend classes including a few full-time missionaries who lead the optional 10-minute Gospel discussion.
